Stefan Szczesny

*1951, Munich

Stefan Szczesny is a German painter, sculptor, and photographer who gained international recognition in the 1980s as a representative and protagonist of the “Neue Wilde” (New Wild Ones). Szczesny lives and works in Saint-Tropez.

Initially, Szczesny leaned toward abstract painting. In 1980, his shift toward figurative painting was reinforced by a guest stay at the Villa Romana in Florence. After completing his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, Szczesny became a member of the group “Die Neuen Wilden” in Cologne, lived and worked for many years in New York, and today is considered one of the significant contemporary artists in Europe. In 2001, the light, colors, and warmth of southern France drew him to Saint-Tropez, where he created his own paradise of art and life.

Szczesny’s artworks are imbued with the lightness and cheerfulness of the Mediterranean. Inspired by Henri Matisse, Jean Cocteau, Marc Chagall, Pierre Bonnard, and Pablo Picasso, he focuses on classical themes such as nudes, still lifes, and nature and landscapes. Sailboats, women, palm trees, the sea, the sun, flowers, and fruits dominate his motifs in vibrant colors.

Over the past four decades, Szczesny has worked in nearly every part of the world, and his works are held in international private collections as well as in the holdings of numerous museums.
