He is a student of the stage designer, painter, and graphic artist Teo Otto, as well as the object artist and draughtsman Joseph Beuys. Immendorff draws groundbreaking inspiration from the works of the Italian painter Renato Guttuso. In reference to Guttuso&#8217;s work \u201cCaf\u00e9 Gr\u00e9co,\u201d Immendorff&#8217;s series \u201cCaf\u00e9 Deutschland\u201d begins in 1977. It deals with the division of Germany and its consequences for the art world and society. He often integrates well-known people from public life, politics, or art into his pictorial spaces. Quotations from works by other artists in Immendorff&#8217;s paintings, other references from art history, are a characteristic feature of his work.  <\/p>\n<p>In 1997, he became a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg. In the same year, he took on a visiting professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin in the People&#8217;s Republic of China.
